State Variations
Many designs of the national flags don't take into consideration the other flags that are derived from it. The Southern Cross Flag is designed so that States can easily adapt the Southern Cross Flag as their own.
State Governments
All State Governments have symbols or emblems of one sort or another. In the version of the Southern Cross Flag, the states will have their state emblems as a disc in the middle of the cross.
In this manner, when the Southern Cross Flag is used as a state flag of Australia, the flag will indicate that the State is part of the Federation, but also independent governments in their own right.
On many other flags the state symbol is on the fly, or the dexter (right) side of the flag. This is considered the inferior side of the flag, while the Union Jack, is positioned on the hoist in the canton or the upper left side of the flag. This is considered the superior or most important part of the flag.
The state symbol is positioned in the centre of the flag, not the inferior fly or the superior upper canton. By displaying in the centre of the flag, the symbolism also displays how the states were 'central' in the formation of the Nation.
The symbol is one third the height of the flag.
